CAMPAIGN FOR THE
RELEASE OF
PATENTS
ON VACCINES TO FIGHT
THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC

 

 

 

The Federation of Humanist Parties has decided to start a campaign to collect signatures for the release of patents on pandemic-fighting vaccines.

We understand that the current state of science is the consequence of a long historical process that over millennia has allowed the accumulation, transformation and complexity of knowledge, methods and techniques. but today, the absurd materialistic culture based on the anti-values of capitalism is preventing the already available vaccines from being made available to all humanity.

International human rights law clearly states that public health is a priority over intellectual property. however, states, strongly conditioned by pharmaceutical corporations (which belong to big international finance capital) do not comply with the release of patents, preventing the transfer of the technology and inputs needed to produce them. in this way, a large part of the world's population, that of impoverished countries, is exposed and defenceless against the virus. it also condemns the whole of humanity to a new growth of the pandemic, since new mutations may develop and it has already been shown that the virus knows no borders. 

The main objective of the campaign we are launching is to raise awareness that patent laws on vaccines are absolutely illegitimate, since they appropriate advances that are part of humanity's heritage. states and multilateral agencies must therefore implement actions that encourage full international cooperation, removing barriers to availability in all countries.

For four decades, humanists have argued that the extremely complex economic and technological problems of today's civilisation will be adequately addressed if the current anti-humanist paradigm based on the accumulation of wealth and power is replaced by the humanist paradigm of placing integral health and education as the great ordering values of society.
